Chanting of maha mrityunjaya mantra
My advice is to do your own research and follow your own intelligence on the matter, and be ready to deal with people who disagree with you no matter what view you ultimately take. I'm willing to bet this is one of the those things over which is a good deal of disagreement, with more traditional Hindus being more conservative in their take and more liberal/western minded people not giving a rat's ass, like /u/ilikepunnythreads has, unhappily, stated. I found a ton of advice concerning it's "use" but nothing on diksha or initiation into it. The nArAyaNa varma from the bhagavata, the vAyu stuti of trivikrama paMDitAchArya, the shiva stuti that I gave below are some of the examples. But some stutis do have the power to be maMtra themselves.
The stuti need not have a penance power behind it. There is a formality associated with the maMtra that is not there with a stuti. I've been given a couple of maMtras and I've recorded the entire process, but I've been strictly told not to share it. Generally speaking one should not formally do the chanting of the maMtra if one is not ordained. If you are just chanting it as a stuti, these are not needed and normally non-ordained people just repeat it. The use could be healing, destroying enemies, destroying fear, fulfilling some desire etc.,įurthermore, the maMtra has RSi, chandas and devata behind it and these have to be said if the chant is formal. The disciple need not do penance and just doing a "maintanence chant" of 10 times a day or whatever is enough for him to use the power of the maMtra. If the guru has done tapas and he gives dIkSha of the maMtra, the power enshrined in the maMtra also gets transferred. maMtra specifically is not only the transfer of the words and information from the guru to the disciple but also the donating ( dAna) of the spiritual power enshrined inside the maMtra. You asked what is the difference between maMtra and the names of God (stuti or stotra). Bhakti, surrender and dedication is the most important element, you can go ahead and learn about it later. I just spoke to one of the senior disciples and he said you can go ahead and chant the MMJ.
